Hi Allister, I bought my syncro weekender 5 years ago always wonderded about my VC read everything tested this with that semms like when the van was jacked up I could turn the prop shaft by hand too But the real clincher was after a few miles warm day turn in a tight circle lots of chirping like a toyota fj40 in 4 wheel drive on pavement bought a new one from van-cafe did all the reasearch I could liike call them how to install and took it to my mechanic. they never had seen one before but had them install it there is no backwards or forwards to those and now? Can`t even tell if it`s even there works like it supposed too get on wet grass or snow does what it supposed to pass a big rig they swerve from my air vortec instead of me best up grade For the entire drive train Ohh did I mention that I had my transmission rebuilt at the same time ? good luck Jim B.

      Thanks for responding Jim,

my vc seems not to deliver adequate power to the front wheels, a failure mode less common than the too stiff or aggressive behaviour your describing. In any case, it would be nice if there was a way of measuring the function of the vc in a way that can be compared from one unit to the next. I suspect there is a range of vc function in used, and probably rebuilt, units.
Did you look at the Volvo document describing testing of vc by applying rotational force on a wheel? I hope to do that test on my van tomorrow and at least get a number I can post and I hope compare to others. In the syncro Yahoo group, a figure of 25 ft/lbs applied to front wheel is mentioned.
Also, the Autospeed article shows testing of vc on a lathe.
Oh and a one more thing… another syncro owner described this behaviour, new to me: ” I did have one incident some 10 years ago. Drove 150 miles, VC would not engage. Cooled down a half hour, worked just fine. No more problems since.”

      cheers,

      Alistair
